Action for Survival

We have been aware of Peak Oil and the coming changes for 3 years, and have been busy during that time in preparation for the inevitable shockwave. In essence, the need is to simplify daily life, moving away from consumerism,  towards a sustainable existence. The term that has been coined to describe what we're doing is 'Voluntary Austerity'. Now that term may well sound particularly unappealing to most, but it must be said that  those who have chosen the route feel nothing but delight in what they see as their new found 'freedom!'

A point to note is that 'Voluntary Austerity'  does not rule out the adoption of 'appropriate technologies' the information for which is almost always freely available from the Internet. There are 'appropriate technologies' that should certainly be taken advantage of, that will help ensure our survival and provide basic essentials, and added comfort, and can be developed at an affordable household level. We are in the process of entering into this low-tech sustainable life style and are presently involved in...

- developing 'permaculture' skills - More

- building sustainable housing structures (straw bale / Geodesic dome ) -  More

- building a wind generator

- building a 'waste cooking oil' filter plant to produce sustainable vehicle fuel - More

- building a 'waste cooking oil / used motor oil' fuel powered stove for space heating ( also to be used for cooking - hopefully)

- man powered fabric production

- harnessing 'Donkey Power' (seeding, milling, transport etc)

- wood fired bread making

- composting - More

We consider ourselves fortunate living here in southern Spain, to be in easy and low cost reach of Morocco. Morocco is something of a 'gift' for the would be survivalist, because in much of the country people live still using all those skills that have long been forgotten by industrial society, skills that will keep their society completely free from the quantum changes that are set to devastate the developed world.

We have been visiting towns in the Rif mountains regularly in these last years, in order to study sustainable techniques first hand, that we believe need to be, and can be reintroduced into 'first world' society. Sustainable agriculture is top of the list, including traditional cooking methods. There's also a wealth of knowledge to be studied in fabric manufacture. Hand crafts of all kinds abound; from wood carving to medicinal herb preparation to leather working to...  The list is long.

In fact Morocco is such a rich source of 'survival knowledge' that we have organised short trips (4 day) to the town of Chefchaouen, high in the rif mountains, to start people on this particular path to required knowledge gathering. For more info please click on the link below...
